Abstract: Solid waste management in South Africa : a case of Alice in Nkonkobe Local Municipality, Eastern Cape Province

The strategic placement of dustbins is vital in order to minimise illegal waste disposal, enhance the efficiency of solid waste management and prevent undesirable and negative effects on human health and the environment. The purpose of this article is to strengthen waste management activities in the town of Alice through the mapping of the physical infrastructure, which has a direct or indirect impact on waste management. This is essential for municipal solid waste management decision-making, including sitting and collection route planning and dumps clean-up. The spatial positions of physical infrastructure were produced from the integration of the Geographic Information System (GIS) and the Global Positioning System (GPS) data. The integration of GIS and GPS presented a platform to capture, map and analyse spatial solid waste issues.
