This article seeks to undertake a review of South Africa's green growth and green economy with a special focus on the socioeconomic context. A systematic review was conducted to consider the country against the following essential green growth global indexes: Yale University Centre (2014), Global Green Growth Economy Index (OECD), World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) and Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) (2014). In this review, it became apparent that South Africa is properly positioned to contribute towards transitioning to green economy and green growth. In further strengthening its position for a green economy and green growth, notable progress is observed on elements such as political will, legislative framework, institutional set-up, financial commitments, high level consultations and stakeholder buy-in.
