Abstract: Exploring the agricultural extension model for the rural population in the OR Tambo District, Eastern Cape Province

Despite the overall positive effects of black economic empowerment, a model used for agricultural extension is critical for boosting the economic sustainability of the rural communities. This article explores the agricultural extension models used in the rural parts in OR Tambo District Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province to determine an appropriate theory that can be extracted. The researchers used a quantitative survey research method on a sample population of 97 respondents. These respondents were drawn from 114 farmers involved in agricultural extension programmes in this area. Although the findings reveal evidence of the application of a farmer-to-farmer extension approach, training and visit approach, demand driven approach and farmers' field schools, it was found that most of the agricultural extension programmes in the Eastern Cape Province are still constrained by a lack of skills, a poor land tenure system and a l
