Abstract: Human resources management practices on employee commitment : the case of a local municipality in South Africa

This study evaluated the relationship between the Human Resource Management Practices (HRMP) and employee commitment within the Mnquma Local Municipality. Public entities in South Africa are faced with a high labour turnover and strategies are required that assist in reducing this. HRMP play an important role in the effective functioning of such public entities. A need exists to ascertain the possible linkage between organisational capabilities such as HRMP and outcome variables such as employee commitment. A quantitative research approach was followed in carrying out this study. Data was collected from a sample of 137 respondents working in the selected municipality using a self-administered questionnaire with reliable measures for HRMP and employee commitment. The findings show a significant relationship between HRMP and employee commitment. The findings of this study are relevant to researchers and practitioners whose efforts assi
