Abstract: The decision to amend Section 25 of the Constitution shakes cohesion : perceptions of public hearing participants in the North West Province

The inequalities associated with land reform in South Africa seem to pose great challenges to the hard-earned democracy and the reconciliation process in this country. The need to determine if the discourse about the amendment of Section 25 of the Constitution contributes to social cohesion triggered this study. The aim of this article is to establish if the views held by participants during the hearings about the possibility of amending Section 25 of the Constitution, which is the supreme law of this land, has drawn back the strides made towards making the South African citizenry cohesive. This study was mainly qualitative and used focus group discussions to source the perceptions of those who participated in the hearings on whether the Constitution should be amended to allow for land expropriation without compensation. 62 randomly selected community members took part in the 1
