Abstract: Contemporary challenges of postcolonial land reform in Namibia : lessons for South Africa

The 1652 Dutch and 1820 British settlers changed the socio-economic and geo-political architecture of South Africa forever. The Berlin Colonial Conference of 1884, which propelled the scramble and partition of Africa by the European countries, ignited colonialism. Today, Africa is categorized as Anglophone, Lusophone and Francophone, respectively. A qualitative research approach was utilised to solicit information, mainly literature review and generally document study was utilised in this article. After independence, the need to re-distribute land back to the indigenous owners became a priority. In Namibia and South Africa, colonial and apartheid patterns of land ownership had an impact on the postcolonial land reform initiatives. The major challenges that Namibia has faced in land reform are the legal court battles that the department of land reform has faced from the colonial settlers each time a farm is scheduled for re-distributi
