Abstract: Covid-19 – a pathogen on the rampage : implications for leadership, science and public policy

Coronavirus (Covid-19) exposes the vulnerability of the global community. It sends nation states into a tailspin. Its consequences on all aspects of humanity are ghastly to contemplate. At the time of writing this, more than 150 countries were affected. Some such as Italy, Iran, Spain and Germany became new epicentres of the disease, outside China where it came from. Africa is set to be hit hard by the rampaging pathogen. This is largely because of her ailing health system. The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Covid-19 a pandemic. The death toll is surging, and the global economy is headed for the worst contraction. In order to contain and mitigate its spread, many countries banned/ restricted travels, shut down universities and schools, and restricted/regulated/banned mass gatherings.
