Abstract: Protection and Defence of African Sovereignty: The Foreign Aid Discourse

This paper contends that the widening gap between developing and developed states has long dominated international relations. The gap has resulted in the continual capital influx from developed to developing states, Africa included. This is said to be alleviating the developing countries' challenges. However, the recipient countries find their political space and sovereignty intruded on by those giving aid. This paper discusses, inter alia, a theory about foreign aid; foreign aid in terms of its genesis and purpose; the problem of aid dependence in Africa; foreign aid and the demise of African sovereignty; China-African development and sovereignty, as well as debating whether African-centred development could be a possible initiative. This paper is theoretical and depends on literature sources as the basis for its argument. Drawing from the literature, this paper recommends that African countries redefine their
