Abstract: Waste Management in the Informal Settlements of Msukaligwa Municipality

South African municipalities experience numerous challenges that pressure solid waste management practices and their capability to instigate new legitimately compliant techniques that are compatible with policy objectives. The study sought to uncover how solid waste is managed within the informal settlements and, ultimately, suggests possible remedies to enhance waste management plans for local municipalities challenged by the proliferation of informal settlements. Applying a quantitative methodology within a positivist paradigm, data was gathered through document reviews and self-administered survey questionnaires from households, local business owners, church leaders and the local authority official. The informal settlement in Ward 16, Nyibe informal settlement, in Msukaligwa Local Municipality, was selected as a case study.
