Abstract: Ethics and Governance: Lessons From the Past, Present and the Future in the Public Service

The public service landscape of the democratic administration, management and governance has been defined by both the milestones and potential areas of improvement on the frontiers of ethics and governance. The institution of the democratic dispensation commenced with an architecture that made for ethical practices in the public service. There were public servants who lived true to the creed of public service ethics and good governance. These traditions were sustained into the current administration. Beyond the good governance milestones of yesteryear, there were issues that have blighted the public service and continue to do so with unethical conduct and disregard of the practices of good governance. These are the behaviours from which we can learn lessons for ethical and good governance practices of the future. This paper is further of the view that we can also learn lessons of good governance from the citizens of the future, that
