The power of example, as opposed to the example of power, is key for societal evolution. As the Russian mystic Sophie Swetchine put it, "there is a transcendent power in example". Likewise, the German-born theoretical physicist Albert Einstein said, "setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means". These edifying reiterations frame the ethical disposition of society. But only a few appreciate that the real power lies in being exemplary. Increasing adoration of the example of power obscures the power of example. This tendency should be nipped in the bud so that society can reclaim its course in the resolve for socioeconomic justice. One way of doing this is by institutionalising those who in public affairs set a good example for emulation.
