Abstract: Energy Transition in South Africa: A Price to Pay for Coal Mining Communities

To respond to the climate change crisis and to stave off its devastating impact, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that by 2030 the anthropogenic gas emissions would need to significantly decrease to limit global warming (Bosca & Gillespie, 2018Cha, 2020). To meet this target, fossil fuel extraction and use must be substantially reduced.
