Abstract: The Role of the OR Tambo District Municipality in Supplying Water in Ngangelizwe Location During the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Act 108 of 1996 mandates the local government to provide basic services such as water to the people. The OR Tambo District Municipality as a water distributing authority is constitutionally obligated to carry out this task. However, the advent of Covid-19 deepened this role as the demand for water increased, to fulfil the requirement of regular washing of hands. The aim of the study reported in this paper is to assess the role played by the OR Tambo District municipality in supplying water during the Covid-19 pandemic. The literature suggests that municipalities played a critical role in distributing water during the surge of the pandemic to enable people to practice hygiene. A mixed research methodology was used, unstructured interviews and questionnaires were conducted with 70 respondents comprising of municipal officials and community members, using a purposive sampling technique.
