Abstract: Challenges in Human Resources Management Employment Equity at a Public University: A Case of the University of Limpopo

The primary objective of this paper is to explore the implementation challenges in human resources management and employment equity with special reference to the University of Limpopo, South Africa. The study used a mixed-methods approach, and self-administered questionnaires were employed to collect data from 42 randomly selected heads of departments. Face-to-face interviews were also conducted with nine (9) human resource officials and labour inspectors who were selected using purposive sampling. It was revealed that the University of Limpopo has instituted and implemented an employment equity plan, which has resulted in responsiveness among the line management in fostering effective human resource management at the workplace. The study further highlights that employment equity was perceived as a suitable strategy for: employing the appropriate people for a job; facilitating favourable conditions for disadvantaged groups; enhancing
