Abstract: The quality of work life of people with physical disabilities in the public sector

The aim of legislation, as well as that of most formal institutions involved with persons with disabilities, is to assist such people in playing a full participating role in society and to increase their employment on the open labour market. Despite legislation and various documents relating to the importance of the employment of people with disabilities in the open labour market, there is still a high level of unemployment and under-utilization of people with disabilities in the public sector. It seems that the barriers to their employment are often of a social rather than an individual nature. There are doubts about how far organisations have coherent and adequately resourced arrangements in place to address the needs and the quality of work life (QWL) of people with disabilities in a proactive and integrated manner.
