Abstract: A strategy-focused leadership for improving public policy implementation and promoting good governance

For about two decades of democratic dispensation, South Africa has developed and adopted a series of policies. These policies serve as the broad strategy through which government strives to address divergent societal problems and at the same time enhance the wellbeing of all South Africans. However, it has been realised that most of these policies do not yield the intended and desired outputs and outcomes. Currently South Africa is faced with the challenge of implementing public policies in an effective, efficient and economic manner that does not only accelerate and improve service delivery but also promote and sustain good governance. Therefore there is a need for these policies to be managed strategically. Public organisations in the new millennium should be strategy-focused and exert strategy-focused leadership if they are to be successful in implementing public policies and accomplishing the intended policy outputs and outcomes.
